How I Lost 51 Lbs Without Giving Up Soul Food
Let me be honest with you the way nobody was honest with me.
When I was 51 pounds heavier, I didn't need someone to tell me to eat a salad. I needed someone to tell me I didn't have to choose between losing weight and the food that made me feel like me — the collard greens my grandmother made on Sundays, the smothered chicken that meant somebody loved you, the cornbread you pulled apart before it even hit the table.
Every diet I tried told me to give that up. And every diet I quit because of it.
So I stopped dieting. And I started cooking differently.
The Lie They Sold Us
The wellness industry wants you to believe that soul food is the problem. That if you just swapped your greens for kale and your sweet potatoes for cauliflower, the weight would fall off. That your culture's food is the enemy.
That is a lie.
I lost 51 pounds eating soul food. Not diet food. Not "clean eating" versions that taste like cardboard. Real food — rooted in the same traditions I grew up with — made intentionally, with some key adjustments that changed everything.
The difference wasn't what I ate. It was how I prepared it, how much I put on my plate, and what I told myself about food every single morning when I woke up.
The Mindset Shift That Started Everything
I had to stop treating food like punishment or reward. That's the trap. You eat "bad" all week so you "deserve" Sunday dinner. You eat "good" all month so you "earned" the sweet potato pie. That's not freedom — that's a cycle that keeps you exactly where you are.
The shift for me was deciding that food was neutral. Collard greens aren't a cheat. Macaroni isn't a reward. They're food. I get to decide how they fit into my life, my body, my goals.
Once I stopped fighting myself, I could actually make intentional choices. Instead of eating everything because "I'll be good tomorrow," I could sit down to a real plate of soul food, feel satisfied, and move on with my day.
What I Actually Changed in the Kitchen
Here's where it got practical. I didn't overhaul everything at once. I made targeted swaps that cut calories and sodium without cutting flavor:
- Collard greens: Switched from ham hocks to smoked turkey legs. Same deep, slow-cooked flavor — significantly less fat. Still tastes like home.
- Smothered chicken: Started baking instead of frying, then finishing in a skillet with the gravy. The gravy does the heavy lifting. Nobody notices the difference.
- Macaroni and cheese: Cut the butter by half, used sharp cheddar so a little goes further in flavor. Still rich. Still real.
- Cornbread: Made it in a cast iron skillet with less sugar. Southern cornbread was never supposed to be sweet anyway.
- Sweet potatoes: Roasted them plain with cinnamon instead of loading them with sugar and butter. When you actually taste the sweet potato, you realize it doesn't need much help.
None of these swaps feel like deprivation once you've been doing them for a few weeks. They feel like your normal.
The Portion Piece
I also had to reckon with portion sizes. Not obsessively — I don't count calories and never will. But I learned to fill half my plate with vegetables, put a reasonable serving of the heavier stuff on the other half, and actually stop when I was full instead of finishing the plate because it was there.
Growing up, leaving food on your plate felt disrespectful. Learning to stop eating when I was satisfied was its own mental work. But it was worth it.
Movement Without the Gym Drama
I didn't hire a trainer. I didn't join a gym. I walked. Consistently. Most days, 30-45 minutes. That was it. Nothing heroic. Just showing up for myself every day.
The combination of intentional eating and consistent movement — not punishment, not extreme — is what moved the weight. And it stayed off.
What the 51 Pounds Actually Felt Like
It wasn't about the number. It was about getting dressed in the morning without dreading it. It was about not being winded walking up stairs. It was about looking in the mirror and recognizing the woman looking back.
The food I grew up on got to come with me. I didn't leave it behind. I learned to carry it differently.
